One of the biggest indicators of how a guitar plays is how a nut is setup and the material it is made from. There are many different options and they all have pros and cons. Most import guitars (and some American guitars) come with nuts made from plastic (ABS) material. Higher end electric guitars come with other typical options of Tusq (synthetic bone aka plastic), bone, LSR roller nut, brass, or a “locking nut”. All of these materials make a significant tonal difference and play into tuning stability.
If something is off on your guitar and you cannot put a finger on it, think about the nut. Is it filed properly? Is it the right material? It’s a pretty easy and inexpensive way to improve your guitars sound, tuning stability, and playability. Contact Us and we can adjust the existing nut or put a new one on for you.
